3 Tips to Work with a Client You Can’t Get Along Well

A recent article, Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace by Wayne Elsey says that high level of emotional intelligence is essential for your success in life and in business.  It’s essential for how you deal with yourself and how well you interact with others, particularly during stressful situations.

Here are four tips to develop your emotional intelligence.

Connect with your emotions: Connect with your emotions consistently and all through the day as stressors arise in your workplace in a flexible office space.  You can follow the simple steps: Take a deep breath, observe how you feel and then proceed.  Practicing these every time something occurs, will make you aware of your feelings, gives you more clarity and momentum before proceeding.

Understand the reason: Normally, there is a deeper reason for the emotion.  The best thing you can do for yourself is to understand why you feel that way in a taxing situation.  For instance, you get angry in an upsetting scenario, what is the deeper issue? Does your anger stem from fear of not appearing to be strong or in control?

Choose to respond not to react:  When you react in a stressful situation, you’re not clear on your thinking. You’re out of control and there’s little thought to what you’re saying or doing. Whereas, when you respond, you’re conscious of what you’re doing, and you’re thinking what to say or do something. You’re in control of your response to an issue.

Understand and share the feelings of another person. When you empathize with others, you see any given situation from their point of view as opposed to your own. When you look at circumstances from someone else’s perspective, you may realize why they decided on something that you probably wouldn’t have done in the same way.

Consistent checking your emotions and your interactions with others will help you develop a high-level of emotional intelligence. Whereas, well designed office space reduces work related stress.
